On May 31, 2019, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act. This set the legalization of recreational use and sale of cannabis to begin on January 1, 2020. The bill was signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker on Tuesday June 25, 2019.

Recreational Weed Guide for 2020

Illinois residents will be able to buy recreational weed from dispensaries across the state in the beginning of 2020. So where can you buy cannabis, how much can you possess, and where can you smoke up? Answers to a few of the most frequently asked questions can be found below:

You must be wondering where you’ll be able to buy cannabis legally in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has published a complete list of licensed dispensaries in PDF format, which can be found here.

Illinois adults over the age of 21 can possibly carry 30 grams or just more than one ounce of cannabis plant, 5 grams of cannabis extract (such as hash oil) and up to half a gram of THC (the chemical substance that gets people high) in weed-infused foods such as edibles. Non-residents can have half of these amounts.

Users will still not be able to legally indulge in the streets or in public areas. Local city and town governments will individually determine whether to allow pot-related businesses to open in their communities, including businesses that would allow people to smoke weed inside the establishment.
